Senior Ladies

Bon Secours County Championship Round 2.

Kerins O Rahilly’s 1-10   John Mitchels 5-05.

John Mitchels made the short journey across town to Kerins O Rahilly’s on Sunday last and got their Bons Secours County Championship campaign back on track with a well-deserved 7-point win over the home side.

On a beautiful morning for football with just a slight breeze blowing from the Town end, John Mitchels settled the better and a wonderful passing movement involving Sarah Kilgallen, Diana O’Keeffe and Simi Ogungsbesan ended with Grace Hamilton outmanoeuvring the home sides defence to blast the ball to the net for the opening score after 5 minutes.

John Mitchels doubled their lead three minutes later when following a great block by Aoife O’Brien, Ashleigh Murphy passed to Lucie O’Donoghue who slipped the ball to Shannon Martin who in turn found Ava Buckley on the 13-metre line and Ava gave the Kerins O Rahilly’s goalkeeper no chance with a powerful shot to the net.

After these early setbacks, the home side slowly settled into the game and scored 3 points without reply to reduce the lead to 3 but following an excellent save by John Mitchels goalkeeper, Kayleigh Collins, Erica O’Connor played a pin point pass to Emma Carmody who released Rachel Kilgallen down the right wing who then found Lily Parker and Lily cleverly rolled the ball across the face of the goal to Shauna Flynn who blasted John Mitchels third goal midway through the opening half to restore their six point advantage.

Kerins O Rahilly’s responded with a goal on the 20th minute before Diana O’Keeffe and Rachel Kilgallen each added points from frees to increase the lead to 5 points before 2 late pointed frees from Kerins O Rahilly’s left to score Kerins O Rahilly’s 1-05 John Mitchels 3-02 at the half time interval.

Just as in the opening half, John Mitchels began the second half in lightening fashion and a wonderful passing movement, involving Ashleigh Murphy, Simi, Sarah and Lily ended with Ava Buckley scoring her second and John Mitchels fourth goal in the fifth minute to push the visitors into a six-point lead.

Kerins O Rahilly’s responded with 2 points before Ava Buckley scored a beautiful long-range point for the visitors. Kerins O Rahilly’s then added another point but some excellent goalkeeping by Kayleigh Collins and stalwart defending from Emma Carmody, Erica O ‘Connor and Aoife O’Brien prevented them from scoring the goal that they so desperately needed to turn the tide.

Lily Parker then added a point for John Mitchels from a very acute angle following a deft pass from Diana O’Keeffe and although Kerins O Rahilly’s reduced the deficit to four points with 5 minutes remaining a wonderful passing movement, involving Clara O’Dowd, Sarah, Simi, and Grace ended with Shauna Flynn being fouled in the penalty area and up stepped Ava Buckley to hammer home the resultant penalty to complete her hat-trick and claim the match ball.

Kerins O’Rahilly’s did add a couple of late consolation points before Rachel Kilgallen completed the scoring with a long-range free for John Mitchels to leave the Final Score Kerins O Rahilly’s 1-10   John Mitchels 5-05.

All in all, a wonderful team performance by John Mitchels, full of commitment, hard work and no little skill and it was also so heartening to see Tanya O’Connor, Julie Foley, Eabha Mullen, Lily Silong and Anna Murphy all in attendance in spite of the fact that a few of them are currently carrying injuries.
