Club Notes 31st July 2023

Congratulations – All Ireland Competitions

On behalf of all in John Mitchels congratulations to the Kerry Senior Ladies who defeated Mayo in the semifinal and will face Dublin in the all-Ireland Senior ladies final in two weeks’ time.

From all at John Mitchels we want to say a huge thanks to the Kerry senior men for a fantastic year. It was not our day in Croke Park but that does not take from the exceptional effort of the team, management, backroom team and the County Board.

A special word of thanks to those involved in ticket distribution in the club. It is a time consuming and challenging task to get everyone involved in the club who wishes to get to Croke Park a ticket so our sincere thanks to all for their hard work in organising.

Donal Curtin Cup Round 6

John Mitchels 3-04   Listowel Emmets 1-09

John Mitchels recent good run continued with a hard fought but well deserved one point win at home to Listowel Emmets on Monday night.

On a good evening for football Listowel Emmets won the toss and elected to play with the slight wind in the opening half.  Listowel opened the scoring with a point in the fifth minute before Grace Hamilton responded two minutes later with the equalizer following good work by Emelia Obrusnik.

Listowel Emmets then added 2 pointed frees but the home side reduced the advantage with a point from Ava Buckley following some great play by Shannon Martin and Lucie O’Donoghue.

Listowel Emmets stretched into a three-point lead with a couple of quick points, and they were then awarded a penalty midway through the first half.

Sarah Lynch stepped up to take the penalty but John Mitchels goalkeeper, Kayleigh Collins dived full length to pull off a remarkable save and moments later Shauna Flynn’s goal bound shot hit the bottom of the upright and was somehow cleared by Rachel Mulvihill in the Listowel Emmets goal.

In the twentieth minute Listowel Emmets got in for a goal but just before half time a sweeping move involving Tanya O’Connor, Jamie Finnegan, Julie Foley and Aoife O’Brien led to Ava Buckley hammering in a cracking goal from the 13-metre line to leave the score 1-5 to 1-2 in favor of the visitors at half time.

John Mitchels introduced Rachel Kilgallen, Emma Lynch, Ellie O’Rahilly and Eabha Mullen at the start of the second half and with Sarah Kilgallen and Simi Ogungsbesan taking a stranglehold in midfield the home side began to get on top.

Rachel Kilgallen went on a typical mazy run and ended firing an unstoppable shot to the Listowel Emmets net after 5 minutes of the half and then Rachel pushed John Mitchels in front with a wonderful long range free two minutes later.

Listowel Emmets responded with a pointed free in the tenth minute before a great passing move involving Rachel, Simi, Diana and Lucie ended with Linda O’Connor blasting to the Listowel Emmets net to give John Mitchels a three-point cushion halfway through the second half.  Listowel Emmets then reduced the advantage with another pointed free before Diana O’Keeffe kicked an incredible long-distance point with five minutes remaining to restore the lead to three points.

Listowel added two pointed frees to leave just the minimum between the sides but some stout defensive work by Jamie Finnegan, Eabha Mullen, Aoife O’Brien and a lion-hearted effort by Sarah Kilgallen ensured the home side held on for their fourth win in their last five outings.

A special word for Erica O’Connor and Anna Murphy who are both battling hard to try and get back for some of the remainder of the season but who were with us on Monday night along with Sandra Marshall and Sophie O’Donoghue.

Training continues on Thursday night at 8pm as we prepare for our next fixture in the Corrib Oil Senior Ladies Club League and also as we look forward to the Championship.  After a rather slow start to the season, things are starting to take shape nicely for the club.

John Mitchels Green vs Dr Crokes

John Mitchels Green team travelled to Dr Crokes on Monday evening last with both teams already qualified for the semi-finals of the County League Division 6 competition.

However, despite this, both teams put in a great show with the home team coming out on top in a tight game. Despite missing a number of key players, Mitchels started the brighter, with Claudia Duffin scoring an early goal, but Dr Crokes were very strong around the middle of the field and they kicked five points without reply to lead midway through the half.

Mitchels came back strongly, and points from Nicole Hennig and Kerri Falvey were responded to by a late Crokes point to leave them a point ahead at the break, 1-2 to 0-6.

coring was at a minimum in the second half, as the defences tightened up considerably, but with a stronger bench, Crokes were able to kick three late points and stretch to a four point victory. However, it is hoped that the teams will meet again later in the competition.

John Mitchels Gold vs Castleisland Desmonds B

John Mitchels Gold Team travelled to Castleisland on Friday evening to take on Castleisland Desmonds B in the final game of the Division 8 County League.

Again a strong start by Mitchels saw Claudia Duffin again score an early goal, but while Desmonds responded with a point, Mitchels had the better of the exchanges in the opening stages and frees from Ella Dennehy and Chloe O’Brien had the visitors 1-2 to 0-1 up after 10 minutes.

Desmonds made a number of changes, bringing on some stronger players and this made a difference in the middle of the field, scoring 7 points without reply, despite strong Mitchels defence, to lead 0-8 to 1-2 at the break.

With the advantage of the strong wind in the second half, Desmonds kicked on with some early goals, and although Caoimhe Nammock pulled a goal back midway through the half, the stronger Desmonds players made the difference. Mitchels never gave up though and created a number of chances but went down to a strong Desmonds team.

Under 13 Boys

Our Gold team played Kerins O’ Rahilly’s in Division 4 of the Central league and played some excellent football throughout going point for point in the first half but fell to a stronger Rahilly’s team in the second half and lost by 6 for a finish.

Our Green team played Austin Stacks in Division 1 of the Central league and despite being down some players on the day we battled hard and came out on top with excellent performances throughout the team and bench, winning by a score of 3:12 to 2:07. Our Gold team travels to Dingle on Wednesday next in our penultimate game in division 4 of the Central league at 7pm

Under 12 Girls

What a match! Mitchels showed great determination in coming back from a 7 point  deficit. A really exciting game two very even teams thanks Milltown. We have now qualified for a County final, provisionally set for 8th August. Well done to all involved.

Under 11 Boys

We had our first game of the Central League last Thursday against a very strong Keel side. After a slow start we soon found our rhythm and towards half time we took some great scores.

The second half was very competitive and both sides had patches of dominance. A very enjoyable game and thanks to Keel for a very sporting game.

A special mention to our two newest referees Shannon Martin and Sam Fitzgerald who officiated the action and did a great job! Training continues next Sunday at 10.30 in Ballyseedy.
