Club Notes 24th April 2023

Senior Men

Our senior men faced Knocknagoshel at home on Sunday afternoon at 2pm. The team got off to a flying start and kept up the tempo throughout. Some fantastic football was on display and at half time the u12 girls put on an exhibition game to entertain the crowd. By half time the Mitchels boys had some great scores kicked with a lead of 0-10 to 0-02 to the home side. Knocknagoshel reduced the score slightly in the second half but the damage was already done. Full time score John Mitchels 0-16 Knocknagoshel 0-08.

Well done to the players, management and all the volunteers who helped out on the day. A special work of thanks to our Under 12 girls team who played at half-time and their coaches for their time in organising today. Also a huge thanks to Emila & Sam who refed the u12 girls game at halftime during the senior men’s’ game.

Under 16 Girls

The Girls had an action-packed week including a trip to Abbotstown for the Gaelic4teens festival. Training as usual Monday evening in preparation for Round 2 of the County League V Duagh/ Moyvane on Wednesday, 19th April.

There was some fabulous display of Football with the girls getting some well fought scores. Unfortunately, Duagh/ Moyvane proved too strong for our girls but they never gave up the fight until the final whistle. They had some great individual stand out performances on the evening with plenty of linking to make for an overall team performance.

The day had finally arrived for Gaelic4teens festival in Abbotstown- National Games Development Centre. We departed from John Mitchels at an early start of 8:15am on Saturday 22nd April.

The girls set out with two teams of 7/9 a side games with each team playing games against other clubs attending the event on the day. We as coaches benefitted from this event as we had an action packed day upskilling our knowledge on current football practices.

The girls were playing games for roughly an hour and a half before swiftly moving onto skill based drills and team bonding exercises. The girls got the opportunity to bond with other clubs up the country who we wouldn’t meet throughout the season. We as coaches took a step back and observed while the girls took control of their games, showing their leadership skills and knowledge of football.

Overall, it was a success as the girls thought the event was enjoyable, practical and a change of surroundings, while we as coaches could see the benefits. We learnt more drill activities, further bonded as teams making it a successful day from start to finish.

Under 15 Boys

On Friday evening we hosted Killarney Legion in the league quarter final in what proved to be a very physical encounter. Our boys showed patience in the first half with some well worked scores to lead narrowly at half time,

In the second half our defence tightened up considerably and we limited Legion to a few scores. Our forwards were on top throughout the game with some superb individual displays running out winners on the night on a score of Mitchels 1-10, Killarney Legion 6pts. We are now through to the semi-final and we’ll train next week times and days to be confirmed.

Under 14 Girls

A busy weekend for the John Mitchels u14 girls squad, who travelled to Dublin on Saturday to take part in the Gaelic4teens tournament in the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown in Dublin.

Over 300 players from teams all over Ireland travelled to Blanchardstown for the tournament and John Mitchels u14 and u16 squads travelled up, meeting early on Saturday morning for the trip.

With O’Sheas Coaches putting on the transport, it was a very smooth trip to Dublin, with a quiz to pass the time and plenty of chat and snacks. Up in Dublin, the weather was definitely not playing ball,  being cold and wet, but the girls shook it off, taking part in a number of fun skills and drills events with players from other clubs and making friends with girls from all over the country.

The last action of the day saw the u14s divided into 3 teams, each playing 3 games. The players were excellent, winning 8 out of the 9 games and demonstrating the best of John Mitchels football. It was a quieter trip home, but the players had a very enjoyable experience.

They were a credit to John Mitchels, so well behaved and credit is due to them and their parents. Thanks also to O’Sheas of Kerry Coach Hire for getting us there and back and to Anthony Clifford of Dan Horan Fruit & Veg for arranging fruit and water for the journey. Training continues this week with parents to be contacted with details.

Under 13 Boys

Our Gold team faced Kilcummin in lovely conditions on Sunday in Kilcummin. Both teams took some lovely scores. Kilcummin were a much bigger side physically but our boys weren’t deterred. Full back Riobard Foley was a rock at the back and chipped in with a score himself.

All the boys played outstanding football and came away deserved winners on a score-line of 3:09 to 0:08. Congrats to all including our U11 boys who played like warriors against the bigger team. Our Green team won on a score-line of 5:15 to 5:05.

The score-line flatters us a bit as we chipped in with 2:05 in the last 10 minutes, our stand in keeper Rian Moynihan (who had played midfield in the first game) played a stormer for us in goals in the Division one game.

All the boys battled hard from front to back. Calvin was his usual threat and created plenty for the lads around him, our wing back turned midfielder David Cullinane was very impressive throughout and teamed up with Rory to nullify the opposition threat. Congrats to all the boys on a hard earned win. Also a special thought to our injury stricken Star Ahmed Abdul who we missed and hope to welcome back in a few weeks.

Under 12 Girls

What a week it has been for our u12 girls. Our week began with a trip to Finuge/St Senans where we had our first round of the North Kerry League lead by captain of the match Madison.

The girls played their hearts out but unfortunately the result didn’t go our way. At Thursday night’s training the girls worked on goal keeping skills & marking skills.

On Sunday it was a big day for the girls, after their training the girls were taken to the Mitchels Senior men’s match by their coaches and performed an exhibition match for the crowd at half time.

The coaches are extremely proud of all the girls. Next match is at home to Dingle on Tuesday the 25th April thrown in 7pm.Training every Sunday 12-1 & Thursdays 7-8. Gum Shields Mandatory. New players are always welcome

Under 11 boys

Our U11 boys were away to Miltown/Castlemaine this week. Two very sporting games were played in glorious sunshine. We showed fantastic desire to win the ball and defended well when we needed.
